Fungal Meningitis outbreaks are being reported in 12 of the 23 states that received tainted shipments epidural steroid injections. There were 17,676 contaminated vials of steroid injections were sold to 75 clinics in 23 states since May 21, 2012. An estimated 13,000 patients were exposed. Contaminated epidural steroid injections (used to treat back and neck pain in outpatient clinics) have been linked to this outbreak of Fungal Meningitis. The number of illnesses is expected to grow in the coming months.

The source of the Fungal Meningitis outbreak is a compounding pharmacy called New England Compounding Center (NECC). The company makes more than 2,400 different medicines sold throughout the U.S. All have medicines have been recalled. Meningitis has an incubation period of several weeks or months.

Utah Health Department has announced that the following facilities received recalled steroid injections and may have exposed patients:

Tainted shipments of epidural steroid injections include:

  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #05212012@68, BUD 11/17/2012
  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #06292012@26, BUD 12/26/2012
  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #08102012@51, BUD 2/6/2013

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has contacted all of the clinics and hospitals involved in the Fungal Meningitis outbreak to ensure that the tainted products are removed and has notified patients who may have been exposed. The exposure period for these tainted products is May 21, 2012 until September 28, 2012.


What is Fungal Meningitis?

Fungal Meningitis outbreaks are very rare. This disease occurs when fungal spores enter a person’s cerebrospinal fluid which causes inflammation of the membrane around the spinal cord and brain called the Meninges. Random cases of Fungal Meningitis typically occur in people with weak immune systems. The type of fungus associated in this Fungal Meningitis outbreak is called Aspergillus. It is not contagious, and cannot be passed from human-to-human.

Symptoms of Meningitis?
