Johnson & Johnson Transvaginal Mesh

Thousands of women, during urogynecologic procedures to repair (POP) pelvic organ prolapse and (SUI) stress urinary incontinence, have been transvaginally implanted with Johnson & Johnson Transvaginal Mesh products. Unfortunately the specific mesh or sling produced by Johnson & Johnson has been directly linked to a high rate of complications, and have left patients with severe internal damage and chronic pain.

The Johnson & Johnson pelvic sling is implanted to give support to prolapsing organs and improve other conditions associated with (POP) and (SUI). When in place, this Johnson & Johnson mesh product supports pelvic organs in females that have been comprised, usually as a result of weakened or stretched pelvic muscles over a period of multiple pregnancies, natural or vaginal childbirths and other causes. These devices can be implanted transvaginally for; (apical prolapse) atop the vagina, repairing (cystocele) prolapse of the bladder, (enterocele) Bowel, (procidentia) uterus, (rectocele) rectum, and urethra.

Names of Johnson & Johnson Transvaginal Mesh Products:

  • Gynecare TVT
  • Gynecare Secur
  • Gynecare Prosima
  • Gynecare Prolift
  • Gynecare Prolift +M

Because of the absorbent nature of the Johnson & Johnson Transvaginal Mesh, over time, the mesh can extrude or erode through skin tissue. This complication, of the Johnson & Johnson Transvaginal Mesh, is the most common and consistently reported.

Additionally the specific material, in which most surgical meshes are composed of, is polypropylene, which can shrink once implanted. Unfortunately if shrunk, this mesh can cause complications with the original conditions (POP) and (SUI) causing them to return.

Johnson & Johnson Transvaginal Mesh Side Effect Symptoms Include:

  • Bulge or lump in vaginal opening or protrusion through vagina
  • Chronic vaginal pain
  • Internal bleeding
  • Mesh erosion through vaginal tissue
  • Problems in urinary tract
  • Punctured or damaged bladder, intestines, or vaginal wall
  • Persisting (POP) Pelvic Organ Prolapse
  • Persisting (SUI) Stress Urinary Incontinence
  • Uncomfortable or painful sexual intercourse
  • Vaginal bleeding, discharge, infections, scarring
  • Vaginal shrinkage

More often than not, when complications occur as a result of this product, it requires multiple surgeries to correct. Unfortunately not all conditions are reversible, thus causing patients continual suffering and reduced quality of life.

Victims of Johnson & Johnson Transvaginal surgical mesh and slings complications or even failures, may be able to collect compensations for:

  • Chronic pain and suffering
  • Decreased quality of life
  • Emotional distress
  • Inability to have sexual relations
  • Inability to work or loss of wages
  • Medical bills linked to complications, including additional surgeries/ revisions

Johnson & Johnson Transvaginal News

On July 13, 2012 according to a FDA safety communication 2,874 new reports of complications, 1,503 involving POP repairs and 1,371 involving SUI repairs were reported to the agency between Jan 2008 and December 2010. FDA indicated that roughly 10 percent of women that did the surgery had complications within the first 12 months of recovery.

FDA said on August 31, 2011, “Believes that vaginal placement of surgical mesh for Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) repair inherently introduces risks of complications that are unique to the mesh itself.”
